The following text is a broad sketch of the present-day situation in Syria. The major powers at hand fighting for control over the Syrian territory are going to be presented, along with estimations on the balance of powers in the battle theaters.



The information derives by distillation over numerous media reports, by taking out the propaganda elements and getting into the core of the subject, as much as possible.  The Syrian crisis is of outmost importance also for the issue of "Radical Islamism in Southeastern Europe" since the major forces of the opposition in that particular country are composed by radical (Sunni) elements and are also in contact with similar groups in the Balkans and Turkey.

The folowing research is a review around the theme of Southeastern European organized crime, mainly in the period 1995-2007, highlighting the emergence of powerful regional “Mafias” with an actual global presence. The main focus is the Albanian criminal syndicates centered on Kosovo. The research is composed by previous material of the writer, some of which was presented in international workshops. Moreover the issue of radical Islam is being overviewed in a second part,for the same period, along with information regarding the state of affairs of the Muslim communities in the region.

Το παρόν κείμενο αποτελεί μια ανασκόπηση επί της δράσης Ισλαμιστικών εξτρεμιστικών δικτύων στην Ν.Α Ευρώπη την πρώτη δεκαετία του 21ου αιώνα, μέχρι και τα μέσα του 2007. Ειδική αναφορά γίνεται και για το μείζων θέμα της ύπαρξης ισχυρών διεθνών κυκλωμάτων οργανωμένου εγκλήματος στην περιοχή.

Τα στοιχεία και οι αναφορές προέρχονται από εισηγήσεις του γράφοντος σε διεθνή συνέδρια κατά την περίοδο 2007-2008 με βάση προηγούμενες έρευνες, όπως και συνεντεύξεις από ειδικευμένους ερευνητές εκείνη την χρονική περίοδο.

Taibah’s International’s main founders was Abdullah Bin Laden, a nephew of Osamah bin Laden. Abdurrahman Alamoudi, its deputy director, was tried in US for money laundering and prohibited transactions with foreign states. Alamoudi was one of the leaders of the “American Task force for Bosnia” – US national coordinator of Islamic Organizations, which lobbied actively in US during the Bosnian war for aid to Bosnians.

Bosnian activities between 1998-2004: In BiH, Taibach had a seat in Travnik and registered offices in Sarajevo and Visoko. In 1998 the organization gave 48.000 USD to AIO’s Almin Foco (one of the founders and deputy president of a Wahhabi oriented organization A.I.O). Between 1999 and mid-2001 it received over 1,5 million US dollars from unidentified sources. No documentations were shown how the resources were spent except that madrasas in Travnik and Visoko were given 7000 USD each.
